MUSIC + SOUND DESIGN:
IN ADLON, There are actually only three pieces of music signifying acts. The opening track, Peter Alexander’s 1957 hit ‘Ich weiss was dir fehlt’, the middle act (invasion of Poland) track, Emmerich Kalleman’s 1926 musical, ’The Gypsy Princess’ - ‘Ganz ohne Weiber geht die Chose nicht’, and the final scene and ending credits, Marty Robbin’s hit ‘Ain’t I the lucky one’. As for the score, it should be minimal, sparse and foreboding inspired by Edward Berger’s ‘All quiet on the Western front’, Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘There will be Blood’ and Jonathan Glazer’s masterpiece, ‘The Zone of Interest’. Sound is deeply moving and very intimate, thus an underscore of dread, even as we see ducks take off and land on a pristine lake. Deep, and mechanical, percussive, metallic - juxtaposed by the rich texture of strings, cello, violin, viola perhaps an oboe if a woodwind finds its way in. Ambient sound is the visceral fabric of our connection to the world around us. We should experience the essence of these environments as though we were right there with our characters. When the tanks roll through the beautiful Polish county side we should hear nothing else save the deafening sounds of tanks and artillery. Equally, we should hear a bird ruffle its feathers, the crackle of a fireplace, the crunching of snow and frozen leaves beneath feet and the crackle of a freshly lit and burning cigarette.
